Postcards from: Fushimi Inari Shrine

Scroll

Golden hour moments wandering around the grounds of Fushimi Inari Shrine, one sunny autumn afternoon.

A brief seven minute train ride away from the soaring concrete and glass ceilings of bustling Kyoto Station, world-famous Fushimi Inari Shrine lies in a quiet, leafy neighbourhood to the south-east of the city.

Follow its tunnel-like trail of hundreds of red ‘tori’ gates as it snakes its way up Inari mountain, donated by local businesses as offerings to the shrine’s eponymous patron god of rice, agriculture, and merchants.

A visit in the autumn months, particularly around mid-late November, rewards visitors to the over 1000 year old shrine grounds with a fiery cascade of maple leaves that sets the surrounding mountains and valleys of Kyoto alight.
